UK Care Worker Sponsorship in 2026: Eligibility, Employers and Scam Warnings

Research checked: 29 September 2026. If you are outside the United Kingdom and looking for a new care worker or senior care worker job with visa sponsorship, the direct answer is that this route is closed to new overseas applications. The UK stopped new overseas applications for occupation code 6135, care workers and home carers, and code 6136, senior care workers, on 22 July 2025. A vacancy page, social-media advert or agent saying that anyone abroad can still obtain a care-worker Certificate of Sponsorship in 2026 is either out of date, describing a different healthcare occupation, or presenting a serious scam risk.

That does not mean every form of UK health and care sponsorship has ended. Some care workers already in the UK can extend, change sponsor or apply under transitional rules. Doctors, nurses and several other eligible healthcare professionals can still use the Health and Care Worker route when they meet the occupation, employer, salary and professional requirements. The decisive questions are not simply “Is this a care job?” and “Is the company on the sponsor list?” They are: what occupation code applies, where is the applicant now, what immigration permission do they hold, and does this specific vacancy genuinely offer sponsorship?

UK care worker sponsorship in 2026: the decision table

Your situation Likely position What to verify
You are overseas and want a new job under code 6135 or 6136 New overseas applications are closed Do not pay an agent or employer promising to bypass the closure
You already hold sponsored permission as a care worker An extension or change of sponsor may remain possible Check the rules attached to your original grant, the new sponsor and the new Certificate of Sponsorship
You are in the UK on another route and legally work for a care provider A transitional in-country application may be possible before 22 July 2028 Confirm that switching is permitted and whether the required three months of legal work for the sponsor is satisfied
You are overseas and qualified for another eligible healthcare occupation The Health and Care Worker route may still be open Check the exact occupation code, registration, salary and employer requirements
You found an advert saying “sponsorship available” The phrase proves nothing by itself Confirm applicant location, occupation code, sponsor licence, CQC status where relevant and sponsorship wording in the actual offer

The official GOV.UK guidance for health and social care applicants states that the care-worker and senior-care-worker route closed to new applications from overseas on 22 July 2025. Skills for Care gives the same practical message to the sector: employers can no longer recruit those two occupations from overseas, although there can still be opportunities for eligible international workers already living and working in England.

Who may still qualify as a care worker?

Existing sponsored care workers

A worker who already has permission in the route should not assume that the overseas closure automatically cancels that permission. Existing visa holders may be able to extend with their employer or update their visa after changing employer, provided the application satisfies the rules that apply at that time. A change of employer is not completed by accepting a new rota or receiving a verbal promise. The new employer must be able and willing to sponsor the role, issue the appropriate Certificate of Sponsorship, and support a valid application before the worker starts employment in circumstances that require updated permission.

Workers whose sponsor loses its licence need to act carefully and promptly. They should preserve their employment records, payslips, contract and all Home Office correspondence, then use official support or regulated immigration advice. Desperation after a licence revocation is exactly what fake sponsors exploit. Do not buy a replacement Certificate of Sponsorship from a person on WhatsApp or Telegram.

Some people already working legally in the UK

The sponsor guidance contains a transitional provision for care workers and senior care workers applying for permission to stay from inside the UK. Where an employer relies on this provision, the worker must already be in the UK and have worked legally for that sponsoring employer for at least three months. The application must be made no later than 22 July 2028, unless the government changes the rule before then. The work must have been allowed by the person’s existing immigration status; unlawful work does not become valid because an employer later offers sponsorship.

This is not a general instruction to enter the UK as a visitor and find a care job. Visitors normally cannot switch into the Skilled Worker route, and working as a visitor is prohibited. Nor should a student exceed the work conditions attached to a Student visa. Before relying on a switch, read the current immigration conditions for your route and obtain regulated advice if your history is complicated. A genuine employer should not encourage you to breach your existing conditions while “waiting for sponsorship.”

Healthcare professionals in other eligible occupations

The Health and Care Worker visa still covers eligible medical and healthcare roles. Depending on the current occupation list and the vacancy, this can include doctors, registered nurses and qualifying allied-health professionals. These roles have their own qualification, professional-registration, salary and English-language requirements. An overseas nurse vacancy is not made ineligible merely because new overseas recruitment for care workers has closed; equally, a job titled “healthcare assistant” does not become eligible merely because it is inside a hospital.

Immigration decisions use the work performed and its occupation code, not the most attractive title in an advert. Ask the employer which code will appear on the Certificate of Sponsorship and compare the duties with the official description. If an agent avoids the code, changes the title after payment, or says the Home Office will not check the duties, leave the process.

What a genuine sponsoring employer must satisfy

First, the employer must hold the correct sponsor licence. Search the current register of licensed sponsors for the organisation’s legal name. A trading name on a job advert may differ from the company name in the register, so confirm the relationship through the employer’s own website and Companies House record. Being on the register means the organisation has a licence; it does not mean every branch, vacancy or applicant will receive sponsorship.

Second, the job itself must be eligible and meet the applicable salary rules. The official job requirements should be checked on the day an application is prepared because salary thresholds and eligible occupations can change. Do not rely on a screenshot of an old threshold. Contracted hours matter as well as the annual figure, and an employer cannot repair an ineligible role by giving it a senior-sounding title.

Third, where a care worker or senior care worker will work in England, the employer must be registered with the Care Quality Commission. Find the provider independently through the CQC service search. Match the provider name and address with the contract and workplace. CQC registration and a sponsor licence are separate checks; one does not replace the other.

Fourth, the offer must be specific. It should identify the employer, workplace, duties, occupation code, pay, contracted hours, start date and sponsorship position. The Certificate of Sponsorship is an electronic record with a reference number, not a decorative certificate sold by an agent. GOV.UK says the visa application normally must be made within three months after the Certificate of Sponsorship is issued.

How to check a vacancy before applying

  1. Read the location restriction. “Sponsorship available” may mean sponsorship switches for candidates already in the UK, not relocation from overseas.
  2. Identify the occupation code. Ask the employer, then compare duties rather than relying on the title.
  3. Check the legal employer. Match the advert, company website, sponsor register and company record. Contact the employer through details you found independently.
  4. Check CQC registration. This is required for employers sponsoring care workers or senior care workers working in England.
  5. Confirm the role offers sponsorship. A licensed company can advertise many jobs for which it will not sponsor.
  6. Check salary and hours. Compare the written offer with the current GOV.UK requirements and the normal market range.
  7. Keep the process on official channels. Apply through the employer’s careers page, NHS Jobs, or the government’s Find a job service where appropriate. A job board is a discovery tool, not proof of sponsorship.

Search pages can be deceptive even without fraud. A page headed “visa sponsoring care jobs” may include adverts that say “no sponsorship available.” The search engine matched words, not immigration eligibility. Open each advert, check its publication date, and confirm the details directly with the employer. Do not build travel plans around the number of results shown at the top of a job board.

Care sponsorship scam warnings

The strongest warning is a demand that you pay for the job. GOV.UK says a recruitment agency should never charge a candidate a fee for finding UK work. An employer also cannot lawfully shift every sponsor cost to a worker simply by calling the payment “processing,” “allocation,” or “slot reservation.” A request for thousands of pounds to guarantee a vacancy or Certificate of Sponsorship is not an investment; it is evidence that the process may be fraudulent or exploitative.

Other warning signs include a personal email address pretending to represent a known care provider, an interview conducted only through text messages, pressure to pay within hours, a contract with no workplace address, salary figures that do not match the hours, and a request to send money to an individual or unrelated company. Be cautious when a website talks far more about visas than about the care services it provides. Copy a sentence from the offer into a search engine: scammers often reuse documents and job descriptions.

Do not submit false experience, purchased training certificates, altered bank records or a fake English result even if an agent says “everyone does it.” The applicant remains responsible for information submitted in a visa application. A fabricated document can cause refusal and serious future immigration consequences. A real opportunity does not need a false employment history to become eligible.

Verify communications by calling the employer through a phone number found on its official site or CQC record, not the number inside the suspicious message. Ask whether the named recruiter works there and whether the vacancy reference is genuine. Search for the employer on the sponsor register, but remember that scammers can copy the name of a licensed company. The email domain, payment recipient and interview process must also match.

What overseas applicants should do instead

If you are overseas and your experience is only in general care work, do not pay for a supposed shortcut. Build qualifications and experience that lead to an occupation genuinely open to international recruitment, but check the professional and immigration pathway before enrolling in a course. Nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, radiography and other regulated fields can involve formal registration, English evidence and supervised practice. They are not quick substitutions for a care-worker application.

If you already hold a relevant professional qualification, search for vacancies that explicitly match that profession and state whether sponsorship is offered. Confirm registration requirements with the relevant UK regulator. Apply to the actual employer, not to a middleman selling “connections.” The Health and Care Worker visa can reduce some immigration costs and does not require the immigration health surcharge, but eligibility still depends on a genuine sponsored job.

Do not use a Student visa as a disguised care-work migration plan. A genuine course should make academic and financial sense on its own, and student work limits still apply. If study is your real objective, plan tuition and visa evidence separately using our UK Student visa proof-of-funds guide and UK Student visa cost guide. Admission does not guarantee a later sponsored job.

Documents an eligible applicant should organise

An eligible applicant will normally need a valid passport, the Certificate of Sponsorship reference, evidence of English ability where required, and any professional registration or criminal-record documentation applicable to the role. Maintenance evidence may be needed unless the sponsor certifies it or another exemption applies. The exact list depends on the occupation, country history and application type, so use the live GOV.UK application page rather than a generic checklist copied from social media.

For an in-country care-worker application relying on previous employment, preserve evidence that the work was legal and genuinely performed: contracts, dated payslips, bank credits, rotas and employer correspondence. These records do not guarantee approval, but they help establish the employment history behind the sponsorship. Any mismatch in employer identity, hours or dates should be resolved before submission, not concealed.

Dependants and family planning

Care workers and senior care workers face restricted dependant rules. GOV.UK provides limited exceptions, including for certain workers whose qualifying Health and Care Worker permission dates from before 11 March 2024. Do not assume a new in-country switch allows a spouse and children to join. Check the current dependant rules for the main applicant’s exact circumstances before accepting a job or paying visa costs.

Other eligible healthcare professionals may have different dependant eligibility. Again, the occupation and application history matter. A recruiter’s promise that “family is included” is not immigration evidence. Calculate the application, travel and settlement budget only after confirming which family members can apply and what documents each person needs.

Frequently asked questions

Can a care home sponsor someone from overseas in 2026?

Not for a new overseas application as a care worker or senior care worker under codes 6135 or 6136. The closure does not prevent qualifying overseas applications in other eligible healthcare occupations.

Can a person already in the UK switch into a sponsored care job?

Possibly. Transitional rules can permit an in-country application, including a provision involving at least three months of legal work for the sponsoring care employer. The person’s current route must allow the work and switching, and the application must satisfy the rules in force before the transitional deadline.

Does the sponsor list prove that a vacancy is genuine?

No. It proves that the named organisation holds a sponsor licence at the time of the register. It does not prove that a particular advert came from that organisation, that the role is eligible, or that the employer will sponsor the applicant.

Should I pay for a Certificate of Sponsorship?

No person should sell you a job or guaranteed Certificate of Sponsorship. Recruitment fees and demands for large “sponsorship payments” are major danger signs. Verify any legitimate applicant expense against GOV.UK and the written employer process.

Are NHS healthcare assistant jobs automatically eligible?

No. NHS employment does not by itself make every role eligible. Check the actual duties, occupation code, salary and vacancy sponsorship statement. Many support vacancies require an existing right to work.

Will the care-worker overseas route reopen?

There is no basis for planning an application around rumours. Use current GOV.UK rules. If policy changes, the government will publish the new eligibility and start date; a social-media prediction is not an application route.

The practical conclusion

For an applicant outside the UK, “care jobs with visa sponsorship” is no longer a straightforward relocation search. New overseas sponsorship for care workers and senior care workers closed on 22 July 2025. The legitimate remaining cases mostly concern existing sponsored workers, eligible people already working legally in the UK, and applicants for other qualifying healthcare professions.

Start with eligibility, not vacancies. Confirm the occupation code and applicant location, check the sponsor register and CQC record, verify the offer directly with the employer, and refuse any demand to buy a job or Certificate of Sponsorship. That process may produce fewer opportunities than a viral vacancy list, but it protects your money, immigration record and time. Rules can change, so recheck the linked GOV.UK pages immediately before applying.
