Receiving a UK Student visa does not finish your travel preparation. Before departure, check that your passport is linked correctly to your digital immigration status, that your course and accommodation details are accessible, and that you can explain the purpose of your journey if asked.
This guide separates four different checkpoints: the departure airport, airline boarding, the UK border and university enrolment. They do not always require the same documents. Requirements also depend on your nationality, age, course and personal circumstances.
Quick Answer: What Should a UK Student Carry?
Keep your current passport or travel document, access to your UKVI account or eVisa details, CAS information, university contact details and UK accommodation address in your hand luggage. Also retain accessible copies of important documents used in your application, especially where your circumstances may lead to additional questions.
You may not be asked to show every document. Carrying an organised record is preparation, not a prediction that Border Force will demand a full visa application again.
The Four Document Checkpoints
| Checkpoint | Main purpose | What to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Departure airport | Identity and permission to travel | Passport, travel booking and digital-status details where needed |
| Airline boarding | Carrier checks that you can travel to the UK | Passport and evidence connected to your immigration permission |
| UK border | Identity, permission and purpose of entry | Passport plus accessible course, CAS and accommodation information |
| University enrolment | Academic registration and immigration compliance | Documents requested by the university, which may exceed border requirements |
1. Passport and eVisa Checks
Travel with the passport or travel document connected to your UK immigration status. Before departure, sign in to your UKVI account and check that your identity and document details are current. If you obtained a replacement passport after the visa decision, follow the official process for updating your account before travel.
Keep the UKVI account email address, sign-in method and recovery access secure. A screenshot can be a useful backup, but it should not replace checking the live status or following airline and government instructions.
2. CAS and Course Information
The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, or CAS, is an electronic record created by the sponsoring education provider and used in the Student visa application. Keep the CAS number or statement accessible, together with your offer information and the university’s international-student contact details.
Know the institution, campus, course title, start date and expected accommodation. Border questions, where asked, are easier to answer when the information matches the application and your actual plans.
Do not confuse the CAS with a physical visa sticker or an automatic right to board. Your passport and immigration status remain central to travel.
3. Accommodation Address
Keep the full address and contact details for your first UK accommodation. This may be university housing, a private tenancy, temporary accommodation or an approved family arrangement. Include booking confirmation and instructions for collecting keys or checking in.
If the final address changed after the visa application, carry the genuine updated booking. Do not continue using an old address simply because it appeared on an earlier form.
4. Financial Evidence After Visa Approval
A successful visa decision means the application was granted, but students should retain the financial records used or held for the application. Border Force does not routinely repeat the complete application assessment for every student, yet an officer can ask questions about the journey or study plans.
Keep important records accessible if your case involved a parent sponsor, education loan, scholarship, tuition payment or accommodation deposit. Our guide to sponsor, loan and property evidence explains how those records should connect.
Do not travel with large amounts of cash as a substitute for proper banking arrangements. Follow UK customs declaration rules if you carry cash at or above the applicable threshold.
5. TB, ATAS and Other Conditional Documents
Some applicants need a tuberculosis test certificate for the visa process. Certain postgraduate courses and nationalities may require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate. Under-18 applicants can have additional parental-consent, relationship, travel and care-arrangement requirements.
These conditions are not universal. Review the visa decision, university instructions and official Student visa document page to identify what applies to you.
6. Documents Used to Obtain the Offer
Your university may ask to inspect original or verified academic qualifications during registration even if the border does not. Bring documents requested in the enrolment instructions, such as final transcripts, degree certificates, English evidence or certified translations.
If admission was based on a Medium of Instruction letter or another English waiver, retain the university’s written decision and any related documents. Read our study abroad without IELTS guide for the difference between admission and visa evidence.
What to Put in Your Hand Luggage
- Current passport or valid travel document.
- Access to your UKVI account and immigration-status information.
- CAS number or CAS statement.
- Offer letter and university contact information.
- Accommodation confirmation and full address.
- Travel itinerary and onward transport plan.
- Relevant TB, ATAS, parental or sponsor documents where applicable.
- Important medication and prescriptions in accordance with travel rules.
- Copies of core financial and academic evidence for backup.
Do not place your only copy of a vital document in checked baggage. Store secure digital copies separately and protect documents containing account or identity information.
Common Outdated Advice to Avoid
“Every Student Must Collect a BRP”
UK immigration status has moved toward eVisas. Follow the instructions attached to your own permission instead of relying on an old checklist that assumes every new student collects a physical biometric residence permit.
“Everyone Completes a Landing Card”
Older arrival guides may mention landing cards. Use current government and airline guidance rather than historical instructions.
“You Must Show Every Visa Document at the Border”
This overstates routine practice. The better rule is to travel with the correct passport and status, know your study arrangements, and keep relevant supporting information accessible in case it is requested.
“A CAS Replaces Accommodation Planning”
The CAS supports the visa application; it does not tell you where to sleep on arrival. Confirm housing, check-in hours and transport before flying.
Questions You May Need to Answer
If you speak with a Border Force officer, answer truthfully and directly. Be ready to explain:
- Which institution and course you are joining.
- When the course begins.
- Where you will stay.
- How you will travel from the airport.
- How your studies are funded.
Do not memorise an agent’s script. Inconsistent answers can create unnecessary doubt even when the underlying documents are genuine.
The Final 48-Hour Checklist
- Check the passport details linked to your UKVI account.
- Review the airline’s document requirements.
- Download course, CAS, accommodation and university-contact information.
- Confirm the accommodation check-in time and airport transfer plan.
- Place essential documents and medication in hand luggage.
- Keep emergency contacts available offline.
- Check for last-minute government travel updates.
Final Advice
A good arrival file is compact, current and easy to access. It should support the same genuine study plan presented in the visa application without carrying unnecessary sensitive paperwork.
If you are still preparing the visa application, use our student visa proof-of-funds guide. Applicants targeting a later start should also consult our forthcoming intake guidance rather than relying on an expired deadline list.
What to Check in Your UKVI Account Before Travel
Do not wait until airport check-in to discover that the passport linked to your digital immigration status is old, expired or entered incorrectly. Sign in several days before departure and compare the passport number, nationality, name and date of birth against the document you will carry. Follow the official update process if anything has changed.
Keep control of the email address and telephone number used for the account. If someone else helped create the account, make sure you can sign in independently and recover access. Immigration status contains sensitive personal information, so do not send login credentials to an agent, accommodation provider or social-media contact.
Travel Dates and the Course Start Window
Check the validity dates attached to your immigration permission and do not travel before you are permitted to enter. Compare your planned arrival with the course start, university enrolment period and latest-arrival date. If a delay is unavoidable, contact the university before travelling and obtain written instructions.
A flight booking does not override immigration dates or university sponsorship obligations. Similarly, a university agreeing to late arrival does not automatically change the validity shown in your immigration status.
Airline Checks Are Not the Same as Border Checks
Airline staff check whether a passenger appears to hold the documents needed to travel to the destination. Their systems and procedures are separate from university enrolment. Keep the current passport and digital-status information available at check-in, and allow extra time if the carrier needs to verify permission.
If the airline cannot confirm your status, remain calm and use official account or carrier support routes. A screenshot, CAS letter or offer letter may help explain the journey but does not replace valid permission to travel.
Accommodation Evidence: What Makes It Useful
A practical accommodation record should show the property name or host, full address, booking period, contact telephone number and check-in instructions. For private housing, retain the genuine agreement and payment receipt. For temporary housing, know what you will do after the booking ends.
Be cautious about paying deposits to personal accounts without verifying the provider. A convincing arrival plan should not depend on an address that does not exist or a booking that was cancelled.
Medication, Cash and Restricted Items
Check official UK rules for medicines and controlled drugs before packing. Carry necessary medication in appropriate packaging with supporting prescription information where required. Do not rely on a general student checklist for customs restrictions.
Use secure banking arrangements for study funds. If you carry cash, verify the current declaration threshold and complete any required declaration. Never carry money, packages or documents for a stranger.
University Enrolment Can Require More Than Immigration
After arrival, the university may check identity, immigration permission, original academic results, contact details, fee status and attendance. Read the institution’s enrolment instructions rather than assuming that successful entry at the border completes registration.
If final results, certified translations or English evidence remain outstanding, resolve them by the university deadline. Failure to enrol can affect access to teaching and the institution’s sponsorship responsibilities.
Emergency Contacts and Document Security
Save the university’s international office, accommodation provider, airline and emergency contacts in a form available without mobile data. Give a trusted person your itinerary, but do not share bank statements, passport scans or account credentials more widely than necessary.
Carry originals securely and keep encrypted or password-protected digital copies. If a passport is lost, report it through the proper local and government channels and contact the university promptly.
If Your Circumstances Changed After the Visa Decision
Review material changes before travel. A different course, sponsor, passport, marital situation or arrival plan can affect what you need to report or carry. Contact the university’s international team and use official UK guidance instead of assuming that a granted visa makes every later change irrelevant.
If the university withdrew sponsorship, deferred the course or changed the latest arrival date, obtain written confirmation before flying. Do not travel merely because an earlier booking is non-refundable.
Arrival Interview Preparation Without Memorising a Script
Read your CAS and offer details once more and understand your own study plan. You should be able to describe why you selected the programme, where the university is located, how long the course lasts, where you will live and how you will reach the accommodation.
Use ordinary truthful language. Contradicting the application because an agent supplied rehearsed answers is avoidable. If you do not understand a question, ask for clarification rather than guessing.
After You Enter the UK
Complete university enrolment, update contact information where required and attend the course as expected. Check the conditions attached to your immigration permission, including work restrictions. Keep evidence of travel and enrolment until registration is complete.
Arrival is the beginning of the compliance period, not the end of it. Use the university’s authorised support service for questions about status or changes during study.
