Hong Kong visa sponsorship jobs in 2026 require the applicant and employer to use the correct admission scheme. Most overseas professionals use the General Employment Policy (GEP), eligible Mainland residents use the Admission Scheme for Mainland Talents and Professionals (ASMTP), specified non-degree trades can use the quota-based Technical Professionals Stream, and qualifying research and development employers can use TechTAS.

A job offer is necessary for these employer-linked routes, but it does not guarantee an employment visa. Hong Kong’s Immigration Department assesses the vacancy, candidate, relevance of qualifications or experience, market-level remuneration and whether the route’s employer conditions are met.

Choose the correct Hong Kong employment route

Route Main applicant Job offer needed? Key distinction
General Employment Policy Eligible overseas professionals and certain overseas Chinese applicants Yes Quota-free and non-sector-specific, but professional and local-availability tests apply
ASMTP Qualified Chinese residents of the Mainland Yes Professional criteria similar to GEP, with Mainland exit-document requirements
Technical Professionals Stream Experienced non-degree technical workers aged 18–40 Yes Quota-based and restricted to listed skilled trades
TechTAS Non-local R&D technology talent Yes Employer must qualify under the technology quota framework
IANG Qualifying non-local Hong Kong and specified GBA-campus graduates Not always Recent qualifying graduates can apply without first securing an offer

Hong Kong also has other talent, entrepreneur and labour-importation schemes. Do not select a route because its name sounds easier. The candidate’s nationality or residence, education, graduation history, occupation, employer and proposed duties decide which rules apply.

General Employment Policy eligibility

The GEP is the main employer-sponsored professional route for eligible applicants who are not Chinese residents of the Mainland. It is quota-free and non-sector-specific, but the Immigration Department still assesses every case individually.

An application may be favourably considered where there is no security objection or serious criminal record, the applicant has a good educational background, there is a genuine vacancy, the offer relates to the applicant’s qualifications or experience, the job cannot readily be taken up by the local workforce and the remuneration package is broadly at the prevailing Hong Kong market level.

A relevant first degree is normal, but the official criteria allow special cases involving strong technical qualifications, proven professional ability, relevant experience or documented achievements. That flexibility is not a general “no degree required” promise. The employer must show why the candidate fits a professional vacancy.

GEP is not available to everyone

The standard GEP does not apply to Chinese residents of the Mainland, who normally use ASMTP. It also excludes nationals identified in the current scheme rules. Overseas Chinese nationals holding PRC passports can use GEP only when they satisfy the special overseas permanent-residence or residence conditions stated by Immigration.

Nationality and residence details must be declared accurately. An agent cannot route a Mainland resident through GEP simply because the candidate is temporarily abroad.

ASMTP for Mainland professionals

ASMTP attracts qualified Mainland talent whose skills, knowledge or experience are valuable and not readily available in Hong Kong. Its professional tests closely reflect GEP: genuine vacancy, confirmed relevant offer, education or documented professional ability and market-level remuneration.

The Hong Kong employer submits the case online. After approval, Immigration issues an e-Visa, but a Mainland applicant also needs the appropriate Exit-entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao and the relevant exit endorsement from Mainland authorities. A PRC passport alone does not replace that entry arrangement for an ASMTP admission.

Technical Professionals Stream in 2026

The Technical Professionals Stream addresses acute shortages in specified skilled trades. It is materially different from the ordinary professional GEP because it is subject to quota and is limited to trades on the Technical Professional List.

The current list covers new industrialisation technicians, nurses, aircraft maintenance technicians, marine services technicians for local vessels, information technology technicians, lift or escalator technicians, building information modelling coordinators and electrical technicians. Each trade has its own education, experience, registration, licence, skills, contract-duration and remuneration requirements.

Applicants must generally be aged 18 to 40 at submission, meet the exact trade requirements, hold a confirmed offer and receive a package not below the applicable market floor. Some professions, particularly nursing and electrical or aircraft work, require Hong Kong registration or recognised licensing. A foreign certificate by itself may not permit practice.

TechTAS for research and development roles

TechTAS is a fast-track arrangement for qualifying companies to employ non-local technology talent in research and development. It is not a universal software-engineer visa. The sponsoring company must operate within the approved technology framework and satisfy the Innovation and Technology Commission’s quota process.

Covered technology areas include advanced communications, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, cybersecurity, data analytics, digital entertainment, financial technology, green technology, integrated-circuit design, Internet of Things, material science, microelectronics, quantum technology and robotics.

The applicant should ask the employer which TechTAS quota or qualifying arrangement supports the role and whether the duties are principally R&D. A generic IT support, sales or administrative job does not become TechTAS-eligible merely because the company is a technology business.

IANG can be better for qualifying graduates

Qualifying non-local graduates of full-time, locally accredited Hong Kong programmes and specified GBA-campus graduates may use the Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates. Recent graduates who apply within six months of graduation are generally not required to hold an offer when applying and can receive 24 months on time limitation only without other conditions of stay.

Non-recent graduates need an offer at a level commonly taken by degree holders and remuneration at market level. Applicants should check the exact institution, programme, qualification and graduation-date definitions rather than assuming any Hong Kong short course creates IANG eligibility.

Local recruitment and facilitation measures

Under ordinary GEP and ASMTP assessment, the proposed job should not be readily filled by the local workforce. Employers may need evidence of recruitment difficulty and a clear explanation of why the foreign candidate’s skills match the role.

Current facilitation measures remove the need to substantiate local recruitment difficulty where the post falls within one of the shortage professions on the Talent List or the total annual remuneration package, including benefits such as housing allowance, is HK$2 million or more. This is a document facilitation measure, not automatic visa approval. All other eligibility and immigration requirements remain relevant.

Application, fees and e-Visa sequence

  1. The employer confirms the route. It checks the candidate, job, pay and any quota or professional registration.
  2. The parties collect records. Candidate, dependants and employer prepare their supporting documents.
  3. The online application is filed. Applications and documents go through the designated GovHK service with the non-refundable application fee.
  4. Immigration assesses the case. It can request clarification or additional evidence.
  5. The approval fee is paid. Successful applicants use the official payment channel.
  6. The e-Visa is downloaded. The applicant saves it digitally or prints it on white A4 paper.
  7. Entry clearance is completed. The traveller presents the e-Visa and valid travel document; Mainland ASMTP entrants also follow their EEP and endorsement process.

A recruiter screenshot is not an e-Visa. Official e-Visas carry an encrypted QR code and are collected through the approved digital process after payment. Verify domains carefully and do not pay a personal account to “unlock” a visa.

Documents a credible case may require

Candidate evidence can include a passport or travel document, photograph, academic and technical qualifications, employment references, professional registrations, CV, signed contract and proof of overseas residence where applicable. Employer evidence can include business registration, financial standing, company background, staffing information, job description and recruitment evidence.

Established sponsoring companies can benefit from specified document facilitation if they recently obtained relevant visas, but this does not excuse false or incomplete information. Documents not in Chinese or English may require certified translation.

Salary and package assessment

Hong Kong does not publish one universal GEP minimum salary. Immigration asks whether the total remuneration package is broadly commensurate with the prevailing market level for professionals in the territory. It can consider income, accommodation, medical coverage and other benefits.

Compare the offer against the occupation, seniority and duties, not only the visa label. Request base salary, guaranteed allowances, variable bonus, housing, medical insurance, annual leave, working hours and termination provisions in writing. For the Technical Professionals Stream, consult the current trade-specific minimum remuneration table.

Initial stay and extensions

Professionals admitted under GEP or ASMTP normally receive an initial stay of 36 months on employment condition or the contract duration, whichever is shorter. Standard extensions generally follow a 3-year then 2-year pattern, subject to continued eligibility and contract length.

Applicants can apply within three months before expiry and should do so early. A pending extension does not automatically permit overstaying. Unless Immigration grants an exceptional arrangement, the person must leave before the existing limit expires.

Changing employers

A GEP or ASMTP professional admitted on employment condition may work only in the employment approved by the Director of Immigration. Prior approval is required for a change of employer. The new role must continue to satisfy the route’s eligibility criteria.

Top-tier professionals who have spent at least two years under the relevant scheme and earned assessable salaries-tax income of at least HK$2 million in the previous assessment year can qualify for a less restrictive extension. Until that approval exists, do not treat the visa as an open work permit.

Dependants and longer-term residence

Eligible spouses and children can generally apply as dependants, subject to relationship, support and accommodation requirements. Dependants admitted under the professional schemes are normally free to work or study during their permitted stay, but each person’s e-Visa and conditions should be checked.

People admitted under GEP, ASMTP and IANG who ordinarily reside continuously in Hong Kong for at least seven years may apply for right of abode under the law. Seven years does not create automatic approval; applicants must satisfy the legal ordinary-residence test.

Where sponsorship is realistic

GEP opportunities are strongest where the employer needs demonstrable specialist value in finance, insurance, compliance, technology, cybersecurity, data, engineering, construction management, healthcare, legal services, shipping, aviation, international trade, higher education, research, creative industries or regional management.

The Technical Professionals Stream opens a narrower path for the eight listed trades, while TechTAS targets R&D. General cleaners, warehouse helpers, retail assistants and unskilled hospitality jobs do not fit professional GEP simply because an advert says “sponsorship.” Sector-specific labour importation schemes use separate rules.

Applicants comparing Asian hubs should read TrendyAcads’ Singapore Employment Pass and S Pass guide and China Z visa and work-permit guide. These systems differ in salary tests, employer quotas and post-entry procedures.

How to verify a Hong Kong offer

Check Credible evidence Warning sign
Employer Hong Kong company identity, business address, domain and real interview Messaging-only recruiter conceals the legal employer

Employer change Prior Immigration approval where required Recruiter calls the visa freely transferable

Common Hong Kong sponsorship scams

  • A guaranteed GEP approval for a job that does not require professional skills.
  • A fake e-Visa sold before the employer submits supporting documents.
  • A claim that every vacancy on the Talent List receives automatic approval.
  • A Technical Professionals Stream offer outside the listed trades or age range.
  • A TechTAS offer from a company unable to explain its qualifying quota or R&D activity.
  • A visitor entry promoted as permission to start work.
  • A demand for crypto, gift cards or payment to an unrelated personal account.
  • A promise that the worker can change employer immediately without Immigration action.

Preserve the advert, messages, contract, invoices and application correspondence. Use the GovHK and Immigration Department services directly. False statements or documents can invalidate permission and lead to prosecution.

A practical application strategy

First identify the scheme. Professional applicants should map qualifications and achievements to a genuine vacancy and market salary. Technical applicants should inspect every requirement for their specific trade. Technology applicants should distinguish R&D from routine IT work. Graduates should test IANG eligibility before relying on employer sponsorship.

Ask the employer who handles the filing, which documents it needs, how it demonstrates local scarcity where required and whether professional registration must be completed first. Share sensitive records only after verifying the legal employer. Do not resign or travel until the official approval and entry process is clear.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hong Kong GEP quota-free?

Yes, the ordinary GEP is quota-free and non-sector-specific. It still requires a qualifying professional case, genuine vacancy, relevant offer, local-availability assessment and market-level remuneration.

Do I need a degree for GEP?

A relevant first degree is normal. In special cases, strong technical qualifications, proven professional ability, relevant experience or documented achievements can be accepted.

Can a Mainland resident use GEP?

Mainland residents ordinarily use ASMTP. Special GEP provisions exist for qualifying overseas Chinese PRC passport holders who satisfy the stated overseas residence conditions.

Can non-degree workers qualify?

Potentially through GEP’s exceptional professional-evidence route or the Technical Professionals Stream. The TP Stream is quota-based and limited to listed trades, ages and qualification standards.

Can I change employers after arrival?

GEP and ASMTP holders on employment condition need prior Immigration approval. Only approved top-tier holders on time limitation without other conditions follow the more flexible notification rule.

How long is the initial professional stay?

GEP and ASMTP professionals are normally admitted for 36 months or the contract duration, whichever is shorter.

Final assessment

Hong Kong sponsorship is strongest when the route matches the applicant precisely. Verify professional fit, local scarcity where applicable, market remuneration, quota or licence requirements and the official e-Visa before relocating.
