Malaysia Visa Sponsorship Jobs in 2026: Employment Pass Salary and Employer Rules

Malaysia visa sponsorship jobs in 2026 require an eligible Malaysian company to obtain the correct employment approval and pass. For expatriate professional roles, the main route is the Employment Pass. New and renewal applications submitted from 1 June 2026 must use substantially higher salary categories: RM20,000 for Category I, RM10,000–RM19,999 for Category II, and RM5,000–RM9,999 for Category III.

The Employment Pass is different from a Professional Visit Pass for temporary services on behalf of an overseas company and the Visit Pass (Temporary Employment) used for approved foreign-worker sectors. Applicants should identify the route before assessing any offer.

Malaysia work-pass routes compared

Route Designed for Typical sponsor Key limit
Employment Pass Expatriates employed by a Malaysian entity Eligible Malaysian employer through ESD/MYXpats or relevant agency Salary category, role and company eligibility
Professional Visit Pass Temporary experts, services, research or practical training Malaysian sponsor for work on behalf of overseas organisation Normally no more than 12 months and tied to approved purpose
Visit Pass (Temporary Employment) Approved foreign workers in specified sectors Quota-approved employer Source country, sector, quota, levy, medical and age rules
Residence Pass-Talent Highly qualified expatriates already meeting separate requirements Applicant under TalentCorp framework Not the ordinary entry route for a new sponsored job

An employer cannot use a Professional Visit Pass as a cheaper long-term Employment Pass. Likewise, an expatriate office role does not become a foreign-worker VPTE role merely because its salary is below the Employment Pass threshold.

Revised Employment Pass salaries from 1 June 2026

Category Revised monthly salary Maximum employment duration framework Additional policy condition
Category I RM20,000 and above Up to 10 years Subject to approval and applicable sector rules
Category II RM10,000–RM19,999 Up to 10 years Succession plan required
Category III RM5,000–RM9,999 Up to 5 years Succession plan required

Specified manufacturing sectors use a Category III range of RM7,000–RM9,999. The correct floor depends on the approving authority, sector and current implementation guidance. A salary within a band does not automatically grant the maximum duration or guarantee approval.

The older categories started at RM10,000, RM5,000 and RM3,000. Those figures are obsolete for new and renewal applications submitted on or after 1 June 2026. Applications submitted before that date followed the prior policy. Existing pass holders renewing after the effective date must satisfy the revised requirements.

What the category means

The category reflects the approved monthly salary and policy framework, not simply the job title. Immigration and the relevant approving agency can examine qualifications, experience, position, company need, sector rules and contract.

Category II and III succession plans support the policy goal of developing Malaysian talent. The employer should be able to explain the plan and comply with the approving agency’s requirements. A company cannot promise a ten-year Category II pass from a one-year contract; approvals remain subject to the actual employment period and immigration decision.

The employer-led application process

  1. The employer confirms its eligibility. It registers with the Expatriate Services Division or uses the applicable approving agency and meets company requirements.
  2. The position receives required approval. Sector or expatriate-post approval may be needed before the pass filing.
  3. The company submits the Employment Pass. It uploads candidate, contract, position and corporate evidence through the authorized system.
  4. Immigration issues an approval letter. Approval can include conditions that must be completed before entry or endorsement.
  5. The applicant obtains a Visa With Reference where required. The Malaysian mission issues the entry visa for affected nationalities.
  6. The applicant enters Malaysia correctly. The employer coordinates the arrival and endorsement process.
  7. The ePASS is endorsed. The approved electronic pass documents the lawful employment and stay.

MYXpats guidance describes ePASS as the electronic pass used for approved Employment Pass, Dependant Pass, Long-Term Social Visit Pass and Professional Visit Pass cases. An approval letter and an endorsed ePASS are not the same stage.

Company eligibility comes before candidate eligibility

The sponsoring entity generally needs valid registration, business activity, paid-up capital or other financial standing, authorized signatories and approval from the relevant sector agency. Requirements vary for locally owned, joint-venture and foreign-owned companies and for regulated industries.

A genuine company can still be unable to sponsor a particular post. Before accepting, ask whether the company is registered in ESD, which agency approves the position, whether the post has been approved and who will file the application. Be cautious when a recruiter refuses to identify the Malaysian legal employer.

Candidate documents and qualifications

Typical evidence includes passport copies, recent photograph, CV, educational and professional certificates, references, signed employment contract, detailed job description and any regulated-profession licence. The employer supplies corporate and post-approval records.

Immigration or the approving agency can request additional documents or verification. Names, passport numbers, employment dates, salary and duties must remain consistent. Never permit an agent to create a fake degree, experience letter or inflated contract.

Professional Visit Pass is temporary

A Professional Visit Pass allows qualifying foreign talent to provide services or undergo practical training with a Malaysian company on behalf of an overseas company. It is normally issued for no more than 12 months and permits work only for the company and purpose named in the approval.

For expert transfer and research categories, current Immigration guidance requires an original employer abroad and salary paid by that original employer. Holders must leave when the programme or authorised period ends unless an extension is approved. They are not entitled to a Dependant Pass.

The sponsor applies before entry. Where a Visa With Reference is required, the applicant enters only after approval and visa issuance. A Malaysian company using a PVP as ordinary local payroll employment creates risk for both parties.

Foreign-worker VPTE is a separate system

The Visit Pass (Temporary Employment), often called VPTE or PLKS, covers approved workers in manufacturing, plantation, agriculture, construction and services. It uses employer quota approval, levy payment, source-country rules, Visa With Reference, security or insurance guarantees and medical screening.

Workers generally must remain outside Malaysia while a new application is processed and enter only after VDR and pass approval. They complete FOMEMA medical screening and pass issuance after arrival. The route limits job and employer changes and does not provide ordinary family accompaniment.

An advert for warehouse, plantation, construction or factory work should identify the VPTE sector and approved employer. Calling it an “Employment Pass job” can conceal that the salary and rights follow a different framework.

Visa With Reference and entry

A Visa With Reference is an entry visa issued by a Malaysian mission after Immigration approval for applicants who require it. It is not the Employment Pass itself. The applicant should confirm the approval letter, VDR requirement, mission process and permitted entry timing before buying a ticket.

Do not enter as a tourist to begin work while an application is pending. An employer saying the pass will be “converted later” should provide official written confirmation of the lawful procedure.

Salary, deductions and contract review

The contract should state gross monthly salary, fixed allowances, bonus, probation, working hours, leave, medical coverage, tax, housing, relocation, termination and repatriation terms. Compare the contract with the salary submitted for the category.

A company should not inflate the official salary and require the worker to refund the difference. Applicants should also distinguish salary from employer-paid immigration charges. For VPTE workers, Immigration states that the employer is responsible for deposit, visa and foreign-worker levy payments to the department.

Dependants under the revised policy

The 2026 policy announcement states that expatriates in all three Employment Pass categories may bring eligible dependants. Each family member still needs the correct Dependant Pass or Long-Term Social Visit Pass application and supporting relationship documents.

Professional Visit Pass and VPTE holders do not receive the same dependant facility. Do not assume that every Malaysian work route permits family relocation merely because an agent offers a “family package.”

Changing employer or position

An Employment Pass is tied to the employing company and approved position. A new employer must secure its own approvals and pass before the worker starts. The original company normally handles shortening or cancellation when employment ends.

PVP holders may work only for the named company and purpose. VPTE workers cannot change jobs or employers without Ministry of Home Affairs permission. Working for a second business based on an informal letter can breach pass conditions.

Where sponsorship is realistic

Employment Pass sponsorship is most realistic for management, engineering, technology, cybersecurity, data, semiconductors, finance, shared services, healthcare, higher education, specialist manufacturing, oil and gas, renewable energy, international sales and regional operations where the employer can justify expatriate expertise and salary.

Category III can cover more junior specialist roles, but the RM5,000 or sector-specific RM7,000 floor and succession plan apply. General labour vacancies use the foreign-worker system, not a discounted professional pass.

Applicants comparing Southeast Asia can read TrendyAcads’ Singapore EP and S Pass guide and Taiwan work permit and ARC guide. Salary thresholds and employer obligations differ sharply.

How to verify a Malaysian offer

Check Credible evidence Warning sign
Employer Registered Malaysian entity, office, domain and direct interview Recruiter hides legal employer
Pass type EP category, PVP purpose or VPTE sector stated clearly “Open work visa” sold without a job
Salary Meets post-June 2026 category and matches contract Old RM3,000 Category III claim
Approval Official letter and authorized application reference Editable screenshot or guaranteed approval
Entry VDR and mission visa used where required Tourist entry to start immediately
ePASS Official endorsement after approval and entry steps Payment demanded to a personal account to activate it

Common Malaysia sponsorship scams

  • An obsolete pre-June 2026 salary table presented as current.
  • A guaranteed Employment Pass without an eligible company or approved post.
  • A temporary PVP sold as permanent local employment.
  • A VPTE factory or plantation job falsely described as an expatriate Employment Pass.
  • A tourist entry followed by unauthorized work.
  • A fake VDR, approval letter or ePASS screenshot.
  • A salary refund arrangement designed to satisfy the category on paper.
  • Payment through cryptocurrency, gift card or unrelated personal account.

Use the Immigration Department, ESD, MYXpats and relevant approving agency. Request official receipts for government payments and preserve the advert, contract, approval and entry records.

A practical application strategy

First decide whether the role is expatriate employment, a temporary overseas-company assignment or foreign-worker employment. For an EP, check the revised salary, category duration, succession requirement and company eligibility. Ask the employer which agency approves the post and whether the application is new or renewal.

Verify the Malaysian entity before sharing a passport. Ensure the contract and application show the same job and pay. Travel only after the required approval and VDR or visa. After arrival, check the endorsed ePASS and never work for an unapproved company.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum Malaysia Employment Pass salary in late 2026?

Category III starts at RM5,000, although specified manufacturing sectors use RM7,000. Category II starts at RM10,000 and Category I at RM20,000.

Do the new salaries apply to renewals?

Yes. New and renewal applications submitted on or after 1 June 2026 must comply with the revised policy.

Can I apply for an Employment Pass myself?

The eligible Malaysian employer manages the Employment Pass process through the authorized company and agency channels. An applicant cannot buy an independent EP.

Is a Professional Visit Pass the same as an Employment Pass?

No. A PVP supports temporary service or training on behalf of an overseas organization, normally for up to 12 months, and does not provide dependant passes.

Can Category III holders bring dependants?

The revised 2026 policy states that all three EP categories may support dependants, subject to separate application and immigration requirements.

Can I change employers with the same pass?

No. The new employer needs its own approval and Employment Pass. PVP and VPTE employment are also restricted to the approved sponsor or employer.

Final assessment

Malaysia sponsorship in 2026 must be assessed under the revised June salary policy. Confirm the correct pass, company eligibility, salary category, approving agency, VDR and ePASS sequence before accepting or relocating.

Research checked 29 September 2026 against Malaysia’s Immigration Department, Expatriate Services Division, MYXpats and MIDA guidance. Salary bands, sector rules, agency procedures and fees can change; verify current official requirements before applying, paying or travelling.
